Instruction Modes

Instruction Mode indicates the manner in which instruction is delivered for each class section during a given semester. The assigned instruction mode can be found in the LionPATH Schedule of Classes, within the "Class Details" section of each class.

Current Instruction Modes

Current instruction modes include:

  • In Person (P): Class meets in person at days/times listed. Instructors can offer up to less than 25 percent of an in-person class remotely (synchronously or asynchronously), a flexibility to manage their own absences, whether due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, during travel, or for pedagogical reasons.
  • Hybrid: 25-50% Remote (H2): Class will meet in person and remotely. 25-50% of the class will be taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • Hybrid: 51-74% Remote (H5): Class will meet in person and remotely. 51-74% of the class will be taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • Hybrid: 75% and up Remote (H7): Class will meet in person and remotely. 75-99% or more of the class will be taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • Remote Asynchronous (RA): Class meets remotely. 100% of the class will be taught remotely asynchronously.
  • Remote Synchronous (RS): Class meets remotely at days/times listed. 100% of the class will be taught remotely synchronously. Instructors can offer up to less than 25 percent of a Remote Synchronous class remotely asynchronously, a flexibility to manage their own absences, whether due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, during travel, or for pedagogical reasons.
  • Video-Receiving (VR): Shared class that a campus receives at days/times listed. 100% of the class will be taught remotely synchronously. Instructors can offer up to less than 25 percent of a remote synchronous class asynchronously, a flexibility to manage their own absences, whether due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, during travel, or for pedagogical reasons. Only for the Digital Learning Cooperative (DLC).
  • Remote Blended (RB): Class meets 100% remotely. The class will be intentionally taught remotely combining asynchronous and synchronous (at days/times listed) instruction.

Changes Effective Fall 2026

A new course mode, and several updated modes, go into effect fall semester 2026. Some instruction modes will remain unchanged. Below is the list of instruction modes that take effect Fall 2026. A description of the Fall 2026 changes also can be viewed in the New Instructional Modes Overview flyer.

  • (P) In Person up to 7% Remote: Class meets in person at days/times listed. To manage their own absences due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, for professional travel, or for pedagogical reasons, instructors can offer up to 7% of an in-person class remotely (synchronously or asynchronously).1
  • (H1) In Person 76-92%;8-24% Remote: Class meets predominantly in person. 8-24% of the class is taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • (H2) In Person 50-75%;25-50% Remote: Class meets in person and remotely. 25-50% of the class is taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • (H5) In Person 26-49%;51-74% Remote: Class meets in person and remotely. 51-74% of the class is taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously.
  • (H7) In person 1-25%;75-99% Remote: Class meets in person and remotely. 75-99% of the class is taught remotely synchronously or asynchronously, which may include required in person assessments or evaluations. This low-residency mode is considered remote instruction.2
  • (RA) Remote Asynchronous: Class meets remotely. 100% of the class is taught remotely asynchronously.
  • (RS) Remote Synchronous: Class meets remotely at days/times listed. 100% of the class is taught remotely synchronously. To manage their own absences due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, for professional travel, or for pedagogical reasons, instructors can offer up to 7% of a Remote Synchronous class asynchronously.1
  • (VR) Video-Receiving: Shared class that a campus receives at days/times listed. 100% of the class is taught remotely synchronously. To manage their own absences due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, for professional travel, or for pedagogical reasons, instructors can offer up to 7% of a Video-Receiving class asynchronously.1 Only for the Digital Learning Cooperative (DLC).
  • (RB) Remote Blended: Class meets 100% remotely. The class is intentionally taught remotely combining asynchronous and synchronous (at days/times listed) instruction.

1 The maximum percentage for remote instruction equates to approximately one week of classes in a typical semester. Additional days of remote instruction resulting from the recommended asynchronous instruction for election days do not count toward the maximum.

2 Some student populations (e.g., international students) have limitations on the number of remote courses they can take in a semester. Further, when students' schedules comprise only remote courses, the institution assumes the obligation to provide student services equivalent to what are available for residential students, an obligation normally met by World Campus.
